AMERICAN ROCK ART RESEARCH ASSOCIATION
Conservation and Preservation Committee Meeting
November 2, 2008
San Diego, CA.
INTRODUCTIONS
CALL FOR ADDITIONS TO AGENDA
OLD BUSINESS
1. Rock Art Site Questionnaire: (Site Management)
Lloyd Anderson has agreed to take on the task of distributing and coordinating the results of the site questionnaires.
2. Petroglyph National Monument: Sandy Rogers has agreed to take on the task of investigating the post-mordem evaluation of the road thru Petroglyph National Monument.
3. Nine Mile Canyon: URARA needs a lot of assistance in their endeavor with Nine Mile Canyon. At our last meeting many good ideas were submitted and exchanged during the meeting, but we were unable at that time to commit any ARARA resources to the project. This project is still on the table and hopefully the committee will be able to bring it to the forefront and join this fight. See attached update from Troy Scotter.
NEW BUSINESS
1. John Day Fossil Beds National Monument: Received a request from Don Hann who is seeking ARARA's assistance in helping the John Day Fossil Beds National Monument in Oregon to begin a meaningful management of a significant and endangered rock art site located on their property. We responded to Mr. Hann and informed him that we will present his request at the Conservation Committee meeting in San Diego on November 2, 2008. See attached report from Mr. Hann.
2. The ARARA C & P Committee has a small amount of money in their budget that we would like to utilize for a workshop of some format at the 2009 ARARA meeting in Bakersfield. Suggestions and ideas are needed so that we can make a decision and submit a budget to the ARARA board for approval.
3. Nominations for a new chairperson for the ARARA C& P Committee. Jack Sprague would like to relinquish this position at the 2009 meeting.
SUMMARY OF ACTIVITIES SINCE THE LAST REPORT OF MAY 2008:
May 24, 2008
Conservation Committee meeting in Farmington, New Mexico. This meeting was well attended (19 members) and extremely engaging.
1. Our web page has been updated, but submissions to the site must first be submitted to the Conservation and Preservation Chairperson who will then submit them to the ARARA board, at which time a decision will be made whether to post it or not.
2. Lloyd Anderson has agreed to take on the task of distributing and coordinating the results of the site questionnaires.
3. Sandy Rogers has agreed to take on the task of investigating the post-mordem evaluation of the road thru Petroglyph National Monument. One of the most challenging questions posed for this task was if/how the rock art was mitigated prior to construction, even tho the sacred landscape was inevitably destroyed during this project. It was suggested that a New Mexico University grad student assist with this project and Belinda Holland informed us that NMSU just admitted 40+ grad students.
4. Troy Scotter presented a length, and highly detailed, summary of URARA's activities in regards to their attempt to save 9 Mile Canyon from allowing further oil exploration. His arguments were concise and specific, and URARA needs a lot of assistance in their endeavor. Many good ideas were submitted and exchanged during our meeting, but we were unable at that time to commit any ARARA resources to this project. This project is still on the table and hopefully the committee will be able to bring it to the forefront and join this fight.
5. Our site recordation form has been updated, approved by the board, and on its way to the web master for posting on our web site.
6. The 2009 ARARA meeting in Bakersfield was discussed, specifically regarding the type of workshop that we would hold. An archival workshop and a conservation workshop were two suggestions that were submitted.
7. Mavis and Teddy will staff the ARARA table at the 2009 SAA meeting. We still need someone to set up an ARARA table at the 2009 SCA meeting.
8. Lloyd Anderson will take on the task of coordinating time lines and links for comments/responses to rock art alerts.
SEPTEMBER 2008
Responded to a plea from an archaeologist in Yosemite National Park regarding the removal of chalk from boulders that contain rock art. Suggested several ideas, one being to contact a rock art conservator and get a full assessment of damages before moving forward the with removal of chalk. The NP archeologist has stopped the project and will contact a rock art conservator before moving forward with the chalk removal. We asked to be updated as to their results.
SEPTEMBER 2008
Received an alert from the Phoenix, Arizona's BLM regarding the theft of a rock art panel from an archaeological site on the Arizona strip. This alert was disseminated to the Conservation and Preservation Committee.
OCTOBER 2008
Received a request from Don Hann who is seeking ARARA's assistance in helping the John Day Fossil Beds National Monument in Oregon to begin a meaningful management of a significant and endangered rock art site located on their property. We responded to Mr. Hann and informed him that we will present his request at the Conservation Committee meeting in San Diego on November 2, 2008.
ACTION ITEMS;
We need ideas for a conservation committee project/workshop for our 2009 meeting in Bakersfield, Ca. along with a commitment time and date for our luncheon/meeting so that it does not conflict with other committees meetings that our members may participate in. At the Farmington meeting we addressed a conservation committee project/workshop for the Bakersfield meeting in 2009. The Archival workshop is still an option and will be discussed.
BUDGET REQUEST:
The Conservation Committee would like to request approximately $2,000 for the purpose of a conservation committee project/workshop, and luncheon meeting, in Bakersfield, Ca in 2009.
Regards,
Jack Sprague
Chairperson,
ARARA Conservation Committee
